2024
Tom Kuster Memorial Grant
Danielle Cleveland
Danielle Cleveland graduated from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, where she spent all of her undergrad working with the Football team as a Work Study. She has now graduated from James Madison University’s Master of Science in Athletic Training program. She served as the JMU Masters in Athletic Training Student Association Innovations Chair for her program, and worked full time while going through the program. During her time at JMU she was also inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa’s National Leadership Honor Society. She says football has a special place in her heart and is currently looking for a job that will push her to grow and utilizes patient-centered, evidence-based practices.
2022
VATA Graduating AT Student Grant
Avery Rodriguez
Avery graduated from Old Dominion University’s Master of Science in Athletic Training program. She served as the VATA Student liaison for her program, and was the President of the Graduate Athletic Training Organization (GATO). During her time in ODU’s program she had the opportunity to be in a variety of clinical settings, but fell in love with the Secondary School setting. After Avery graduates, she is working as an Athletic Trainer in Virginia Bech Public Schools.
2021
VATA Graduating AT Student Grant
Briana Lawry
Briana Lawry recently graduated from Old Dominion University’s Master of Science of athletic training program and was part of the inaugural cohort. Briana served a two-year term as ODU’s VATA student liaison. In this role she collaborated with other AT students in the area to plan the annual student VATA symposium. Briana also served as vice president her first year and the president her second year to ODU’s graduate of athletic training organization. In this role she mentored and cooperated with her classmates as well as advocated for the program on campus. She now resides in Winston-Salem, North Carolina with her fiancé and is getting ready to take her BOC exam this summer.
2019
VATA Graduating AT Student Grant
Zack Maust
Zack graduated from Virginia Tech in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. While at Virginia Tech, he spent 4 years as a Student Athletic Training Aide for the Football team. After graduating, he attended the University of Lynchburg where he graduated, earning his Master’s Degree in Athletic Training, in 2019. Zack was a member of the Iota Tau Alpha Athletic Training Honor Society for two years. At Lynchburg, he spent time working with Softball and Men’s Lacrosse along with Liberty University Football and the High-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, the Lynchburg Hillcats. He now works at Virginia Tech as an Athletic Trainer with the football team.
